Revolutionizing Education: High Schoolers Excel in GenAI Bootcamp
Sergey Brin, Google co-founder says coding is currently the top use of AI. So, why not revolutionizing CS education? Even high schoolers from Taiwan can excel in GenAI bootcamp.
With this AI boom… “being a computer scientist, like, I want to be a part of that. It’s just so exciting. And yeah, it’s a treat” — Sergey Brin, Google Co-Founder at Google IO 2024
Earlier this year, my Teaching Assistant (TA) and I decided to test how quickly high school students could progress in a ten-week GenAI bootcamp. We believe that traditional programming methods are becoming obsolete and that students can learn faster and achieve more with the aid of AI. As Sergey Brin mentioned at Google IO 2024, coding is currently the top use of AI.
The results exceeded our expectations. Not only did the students grasp core concepts and software development skills, but they also successfully completed group projects. Their presentations speak for themselves:
- FruitSenser: This project detects a fruit from a camera input and generates a short introduction about it.
- Translate Summary Robot: This tool translates and summarizes meeting conversations.
- AI-Assisted Learning Portfolio: Students created personalized learning portfolios with the help of AI.
Congratulations to the students for taking a significant step forward in their computer science journeys, augmented by AI. They have demonstrated learning by doing, team collaboration, solving real-world problems of their own choice, and honing their presentation skills, all while being coached by professionals. Kudos to the teams from Computer Science for Equity & Beyond (CSEB) and VC.in.Taiwan for making this possible. Special thanks to the fantastic guest speakers working at Google, who inspired the students by sharing their experiences and answering questions. These invaluable conversations will continue to benefit the students on their journeys ahead.
